People are often a bit confused about my role at the Law Offices of Alisha A. Wood. When you step off the elevator, the sign reads "Law Offices of Alisha A Wood" and also "Law Offices of Matthew H. Springmeyer" below it. What does that mean? Are they completely separate firms, or is this Springmeyer guy part of the Wood team?
The frank answer is that I am "of counsel" to the Law Offices of Alisha A. Wood. The Of Counsel label means different things to different people. For me, it mean that I handle Department of Motor Vehicles hearings and issues for the firm, I consult on complex cases and legal issues, I assist in motion work and research for the firm, and I serve as a legal writing and researching mentor to the interns at the firm. I have spent may first years practicing becoming well versed on the DMV license suspension structure and how to effectively defend clients facing a license suspension or revocation for various reasons. I have also handled numerous appeals for the firm-both administrative and criminal appeals. For example, I recently assisted with a Writ of Mandamus where the DMV erroneously suspended our client's license and the DMV settled the matter for full restoration of the client's license privilege before the hearing.
I also have my own law firm, the Law Office of Matthew H. Springmeyer. I handle a variety of matters, such as DUI, criminal defense, restraining orders, landlord-tenant, contractual disputes, expungements, traffic trials and appeals, and civil litigation. For example, I recently helped the firm prepare motions for several United States Military veterans for a diversion program that will allow them to receive treatment for their PTSD and other issue. The motions were ultimately granted, but Mrs. Wood brought me in to help prepare a Response to the People's objection.
I love being a part of the Law Offices of Alisha A. Wood team and also having my own separate law practice. I enjoy helping Ms. Wood and the firm with their matters and lending my expertise as much as possible. I have never been happier or found my career more rewarding than I do right now.
